Today was the first day of school. This is what I felt like after about an hour with my new class:
We were listing emotion words that might describe a third grader on the first day of school. Most years, the words are things like "nervous" or "happy" or "excited". And I got a few of those, and then P raised his hand. His word was "disappointed". Huh? THAT'S the word you can think of to describe how you feel the first day of school? After an hour or so?
I asked him if he know what disappointed meant. Yes, he said, it is when someone makes a promise to you and they don't keep it and you end up feeling sad. Ummm...sorry I couldn't live up to your expectations, kid.
Are they really that jaded and despondent? Time will tell...if I don't throw in the towel first.
